{"id":1153,"date":"2008-07-16T15:09:43","date_gmt":"2008-07-16T19:09:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vallentyne.com\/blog\/?p=1153"},"modified":"2008-07-17T13:50:41","modified_gmt":"2008-07-17T17:50:41","slug":"breaking-news-old-fart-too-old-to-be-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vallentyne.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/16\/breaking-news-old-fart-too-old-to-be-president\/","title":{"rendered":"Breaking News: Old Fart too old to be President"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Apparently some Americans think that McCain is a little too old to be President (he&#8217;s 71, will turn 72 before the elections are over).\u00c2\u00a0 Just a tad too old.\u00c2\u00a0 Okay, maybe really really ancient.<\/p>\n<p>It seems that the topic keeps coming up during his campaign, and it&#8217;s certainly not going to go away.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, some people are rather transfixed by it.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/thingsyoungerthanmccain.com\" target=\"_blank\">This website<\/a> keeps a rather lengthy list of things that McCain is older than:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Six-packs, automatic transmissions and the American Express card were all introduced after he was born &#8211; not to mention computers, which McCain admits he doesn&#8217;t use.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That quote is from <a href=\"http:\/\/cnews.canoe.ca\/CNEWS\/World\/2008\/07\/14\/6155526-ap.html\" target=\"_blank\">an article<\/a> that examines some of the numbers behind this issue.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Overall, 38 per cent said &#8220;too old&#8221; describes McCain somewhat or very well&#8230;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Personally, it&#8217;s the computer comment above that would worry me most, and not just because I&#8217;m a geek.\u00c2\u00a0 I just have to think that someone who doesn&#8217;t even use a computer in this day and age is not really qualified to have any global power, whatsoever.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean I don&#8217;t expect him to be an expert, but come on, most grandmothers his age can check their email.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s a pretty grim outlook in my mind.\u00c2\u00a0 How will he make intelligent decisions in any capacity in the globalized world today?\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, he will have expert advisors and such, but I think it reveals a certain &#8220;out-of-touch&#8221;ness to his attitudes that would be a disaster if he actually won.<\/p>\n<p>My 2 cents.<\/p>\n<p>**** Update:<\/p>\n<p>Apparently I&#8217;m not the only one with these kinds of crackpot ideas.\u00c2\u00a0 The Russian President just <a href=\"http:\/\/cnews.canoe.ca\/CNEWS\/World\/2008\/07\/17\/6185306-ap.html\" target=\"_blank\">issued a warning<\/a> to all of his elected officials to brush up on their computer skills, or they could be out of a job.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>President Dmitry Medvedev says the government doesn&#8217;t hire people who can&#8217;t read and write, and computer literacy today is the same.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So there you go.\u00c2\u00a0 I completely agree with basic computer literacy as a minimum for most jobs these days, even if you are swinging a hammer you need to be able to interface with the rest of us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Apparently some Americans think that McCain is a little too old to be President (he&#8217;s 71, will turn 72 before the elections are over).\u00c2\u00a0 Just a tad too old.\u00c2\u00a0 Okay, maybe really really ancient.
