{"id":1272,"date":"2008-09-26T13:45:13","date_gmt":"2008-09-26T17:45:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vallentyne.com\/blog\/?p=1272"},"modified":"2008-09-26T13:45:13","modified_gmt":"2008-09-26T17:45:13","slug":"world-news-roundup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vallentyne.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/26\/world-news-roundup\/","title":{"rendered":"World News Roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First off, from Germany we have the story of a dentist who decided he was done waiting for payment from a woman, and forced his way into her house, tied her up and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/newstopics\/howaboutthat\/3079442\/German-dentist-extracts-payment-from-patient.html\" target=\"_blank\">forcibly removed the dental bridges<\/a> he had put in. \u00c2\u00a0Just <em>chew<\/em> on that one for a <em>bit<\/em>. \u00c2\u00a0Apparently he was <em>chomping <\/em>at the bit to get his money. \u00c2\u00a0The woman was a tad shaken by her <em>brush<\/em> with the man. \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;m done.<\/p>\n<p>Then it&#8217;s off to Iowa where someone in the college editor&#8217;s office will most certainly be taking some heat for <a href=\"http:\/\/cnews.canoe.ca\/CNEWS\/WeirdNews\/2008\/09\/25\/6875781-ap.html\" target=\"_blank\">this gaffe<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A calendar entry for Feb. 16, 2009, was supposed to read &#8220;Black History Lunch and Learn.&#8221; Instead, it says &#8220;Black History Linch and Learn.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently after giving away 10000 copies of this handbook, the best resolution is to print up a <strong><em>sticker<\/em><\/strong> to cover up the offending word. \u00c2\u00a0Um, ya.<\/p>\n<p>Moving on, good news for old folks. \u00c2\u00a0A company in Japan has announced a wearable device that<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/asia-pacific\/7633989.stm\" target=\"_blank\"> amounts to a personal airbag<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0It inflates in .1 seconds when it detects the individual falling backwards and is supposed to prevent injury. \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s apparently targeted at elderly eplieptic patients, who probably fall down a lot. \u00c2\u00a0Two things come to mind though: \u00c2\u00a0it only protects you if you fall backwards, and from the video it looks like you probably can&#8217;t get back up one you are flat on your back with that thing underneath you. \u00c2\u00a0A much more practical solution would be to completely encase our elderly relatives in an inflatable sumo suit so that they can be completely protected from any injury. \u00c2\u00a0Of course they can then also then be part of fun backyard games: \u00c2\u00a0&#8220;Don&#8217;t let Grandma touch the ground!&#8221;, or a humane version of the old chestnut: &#8220;Let&#8217;s kick the old folks!&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Dad, can we take Grandma to the park?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sure Bobby.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Awesome, let&#8217;s roll her down the big hill!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(chuckling) &#8220;Of course, you scamp! \u00c2\u00a0Now go on, don&#8217;t leave grandma waiting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, sure Dad! \u00c2\u00a0Um, can you get her down off the roof of the garage?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sure thing Bobby!
