{"id":1740,"date":"2009-06-05T13:16:34","date_gmt":"2009-06-05T17:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vallentyne.com\/blog\/?p=1740"},"modified":"2009-06-05T13:18:42","modified_gmt":"2009-06-05T17:18:42","slug":"these-are-my-heartsongs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vallentyne.com\/blog\/2009\/06\/05\/these-are-my-heartsongs\/","title":{"rendered":"These Are My Heartsongs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes I get the urge to share my taste in music with others, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s uncontrollable and it usually happens when I happen onto a particularly excellent song on the iPod as I work away at my desk.\u00c2\u00a0 The best moments are when the song gives me goosebumps, a rush of emotion, and a sense of the impossible awesomeness of the song.\u00c2\u00a0 The drive to immediately tell someone about it, and let someone else either agree completely with me, or realize that yes, I am in fact a musical genius and yes my taste is impeccable and compelling.<\/p>\n<p>Before you start on me, I know I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not a genius, and I also know that for most, artists like Bob Dylan (heard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bobdylan.com\/#\/songs\/house-carpenter\" target=\"_blank\">House Carpenter<\/a> today, had a religious experience, and then wrote this post) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnprine.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Prine<\/a> aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t going to appear on any \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Five Star\u00e2\u20ac\u009d iTunes playlists like they do for me.\u00c2\u00a0 There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just no arguing with that feeling, though, so sometimes I attack Nikki with this stuff.\u00c2\u00a0 She\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s very patient with me, and seems to even enjoy some of the stuff I make her listen to.\u00c2\u00a0 Sometimes it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s too much even for her though, like if I push a particularly twangy or bluegrassy <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Earle\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Earle<\/a> song.<\/p>\n<p>Even though I have been listening to that same stuff for literally more than a decade now, that doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t mean it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t happen with newer stuff.\u00c2\u00a0 For instance I recently have become addicted to Weezer (the post title is a nod to a Weezer song) like it is crack.\u00c2\u00a0 You just can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t find better crafted, hookier pop rock these days.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s clever and sometimes funny, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not all the same, and it will grab you by the ears and make you listen over and over.\u00c2\u00a0 On the less rocky side of things, there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Moonlight Graham (<a href=\"http:\/\/grahamgreer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">the guy<\/a> from Barstool Prophets) which is excellent, thoughtful and his voice is a pleasure to listen to.\u00c2\u00a0 Then all the way to gravel road, whisky bottle, dusty pickup folk-country is Fred Eaglesmith (thanks Shawn), who writes and sings as raw as it gets.<\/p>\n<p>I could go on, but there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s only so much music you can really process to this extent.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean sure I listen to the radio, but most of those songs come and go without really staying with you.\u00c2\u00a0 Quality is hard to come by it seems.<\/p>\n<p>Are there any songs like that for you, or is it just me?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes I get the urge to share my taste in music with others, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s uncontrollable and it usually happens when I happen onto a particularly excellent song on the iPod as I work away at my desk.\u00c2\u00a0 The best moments &hellip;
