{"id":3148,"date":"2013-07-25T13:40:16","date_gmt":"2013-07-25T17:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vallentyne.com\/blog\/?p=3148"},"modified":"2013-07-25T13:40:16","modified_gmt":"2013-07-25T17:40:16","slug":"in-which-i-re-affirm-the-miracle-of-air-conditioning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vallentyne.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/25\/in-which-i-re-affirm-the-miracle-of-air-conditioning\/","title":{"rendered":"In which I re-affirm the miracle of air conditioning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I hereby\u00c2\u00a0propose that air conditioning is the single cause of the modern age of prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>Let me explain.\u00c2\u00a0 Recently our air conditioner suffered a little problem, which naturally only happens when the temperature reaches into the absurd, like it did recently in Ottawa.\u00c2\u00a0 If felt like an eternity of way above average temperatures, reaching 40C with the humidity.\u00c2\u00a0 Anyway, I happened to be on holidays for most of the heat wave, which may be a good thing most times, but seemed to hinder our activities due to the crazy heat.\u00c2\u00a0 Anyway, when the air conditioning died in the house, needless to say I called the repair guy immediately.\u00c2\u00a0 Also, finding out that there would be a long delay before anybody showed up was also not much of a surprise.<\/p>\n<p>So I was left to contemplate the fact that my thermostat in the hallway read 30C, with every window open in the house, and the outside humidity approaching 94%.\u00c2\u00a0 Several things came to my mind slowly over the next 48 or 60 hours before we had AC again (the humanity!).\u00c2\u00a0 First off, beer tastes much better when you are being slowly cooked alive in your own home (good thing I was on holidays).\u00c2\u00a0 Second, sustained heat does something to your brain where any drive you may have to get things done just melts right away.\u00c2\u00a0 You just can&#8217;t put two thoughts together, no matter what you do.\u00c2\u00a0 So, combine those two things and you have the basis for my hard-won theory that air-conditioning brought us to our current level of prosperity, not the other way around.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/elements\/2013\/07\/psychology-why-summer-makes-us-lazy.html\">I may not be the only one&#8230;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, one notable exception to this rule is Nikki.\u00c2\u00a0 As I have mentioned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vallentyne.com\/blog\/2008\/02\/15\/thermal-thief\/\">before<\/a>, she is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vallentyne.com\/blog\/2009\/01\/07\/mushmom\/\">thermally challenged<\/a> at the best of times.\u00c2\u00a0 So when I was literally reduced to a drooling moron affixed to a chair, she was more and more comfortable.\u00c2\u00a0 Her skin was literally cool to the touch at 30C.\u00c2\u00a0 She said more than once how comfortable she was, and was not very sympathetic to my grumbling and complaints.\u00c2\u00a0 I may have mumbled something about how that isn&#8217;t natural, and that she may be a robot, or something like that.\u00c2\u00a0 I can&#8217;t recall now since I was more or less\u00c2\u00a0sweating beer by this point.<\/p>\n<p>This post would have had a stunningly crafted conclusion if it wasn&#8217;t mostly written while my brain was turned off.\u00c2\u00a0 You get the point, right?\u00c2\u00a0 Right?<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t take your AC for granted, people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I hereby\u00c2\u00a0propose that air conditioning is the single cause of the modern age of prosperity.
